Laws switch police to electric cars

Myrtle Beach police can say goodbye to the golf carts they use to patrol Ocean Boulevard during the summer. Two recently enacted state laws say it's illegal for them to use them in most cases. [...]

But the department still needed to patrol the area during the busy tourist season.

The answer was a small electric car similar to a golf cart, but more expensive.

"We needed to find an alternative vehicle that could be licensed and used in the amusement area of Ocean Boulevard," said Myrtle Beach city spokesman Mark Kruea.

In about two months, the Police Department will get six Global Electric Motorcars. The cost for each car will be about $7,000. The fleet will total about $42,000. [...]
